Jay William Daly --------- Two Okoboji Women Killed In Auto Accident Sunday Eve It greaves us sorely to be called upon to chronicle the terrible accident that took the lives of two of the women of our little town Sunday night on the grade between here and Arnolds Park. Mrs. A. M. Kennison and Mrs. Orville Hamilton were on their way to church to see the Missionary play in which their granddaughters, Bernice Carlson and Dorothy Michaelson, respectively, had a part. When nearing the other side of the grade the lights of a car coming from the south, so blinded John Meyers, who was coming from the north, that he struck the women before seeing them, and the damage was done. Verlin Heldridge who was with Meyer didn't see the women until Meyer had jerked the car the car went through the railing on the grade and was so badly damaged it would not run. The boys hurried to Gateswood garage where they told of the accident and the Eckman brothers took their cars and went to the scene of the disaster. The bodies of the women were hurried to Milford hospital but they were both dead before they arrived. The news of the accident spread and the community mourned the passing of two of it's most worthy citizens. This tragedy, not unlike many recorded in our papers daily, has come home and every household has paused to realize what a terrible thing it is to have two wives and mothers taken from their homes and from our midst in such a manner. Mrs. Orville Hamilton Mrs. Orville Hamilton was born near Louisville, Kentucky, January 12, 1874, and met death by accident, January 12, 1930, on her 56 birthday. In 1892 she, was, married to Robert J. Thomas, three children were born to this union, Chester, Mae and Floyd. Floyd died in infancy. She moved to Des Moines, when her children were young and lived there several years. In 1915 she came to Okoboji where she was married to Orville Hamilton, and has since made her home here. She was an active member of the Fiends church at Arnolds Park, and a member of the Degree of Honor Protective Association. Mrs. Hamilton was a good women in her home and helpful in the community. She had mothered her granddaughter, Dorothy Michaelson, since infancy and at the time of her death was caring for two little children that were otherwise without a home. She is survived by her husband and two children, Chester Thomas and Mrs. Mae Hurley, of Des Moines, and two grandchildren, Dorothy in her home and Chester, Jr., Thomas, of Des Moines. Funeral services were held in Friends church Tuesday afternoon, and the body taken to Des Moines for Interment. Mrs. A. M. Kennison Mahala Francis Eye was born in West Virginia in 1864, and died January 12, 1930. She moved to Iowa with her parents in 1872. On April 9, 1882, she was married to A. M. Kennison, at Onslow, Iowa. The Family came to Arnolds Park in 1898 on Thanksgiving Day, and aside from 3 years spent in Missouri, have made their home in this locality. They came to Okoboji 17 years ago. Mrs. Kennison was the mother of ten children, two, May and Frank, preceded her in death, David, of Missouri, Bella (Mrs. W, Parker) of California, Maude (Mrs. A. Jensen) of Milford), Agnes (Mrs. E. W. Klett) of Chicago, Charley and Fred of Arnolds Park and Tillie (Mrs. C. A. Carlson) and Goldie (Mrs. J. Daley) of Okoboji. Mrs. Kennison was a good and helpful wife and a kind and loving mother. She was ambitious beyond her strength, but never too busy to administer kindly service to her family and friends. Death found her in the very midst of generous living. Her days were full. Wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor, friend, in every roll she lived fully, nothing was too much for her to undertake, if prompted by another's need, and the thing she undertook she usually accomplished. The home which centered around her seems empty without her cheery spirit and only the passing years can measure to each, the depth of their loss. Not only in the home will she be missed, but her many friends and neighbors and our summer visitors will mourn the passing of Mrs. Kennison, She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband, her eight children, twenty-seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild, a sister who lives in Chicago, besides a host of friends. All of the children were in attendance at the funeral with the exception of Mrs. Parker, who lives in California. Funeral services, were conducted at the Friends church Wednesday with Rev. Reece in charge and burial in the Okoboji Cemetery. *Obituary is published in the Spirit Lake Beacon 1-16-1930 under the last name of Kennison. ---------
