Description	:	Ralph Hiram Pratt, beloved and devoted son of Mr and Mrs Ralph H. Pratt was born at Shambaugh, May 23, 1918. At the close of World War I, Ralph's father returned from overseas and he and his family came to New Market to reside. Ralph was educated in the New Market school and graduated in 1935. He was an excellent student and took an active part in all school activities. He entered Simpson college and graduated in 1939. Pratt was born at Shambaugh, May 23, 1918. At the close of World War I, Ralph's father returned from overseas and he and his family came to New Market to reside. Ralph was educated in the New Market school and graduated in 1935. He was an excellent student and took an active part in all school activities. He entered Simpson college and graduated in 1939. On September 18, 1942 Ralph joined the Marine Corps and was ordered to Quantico, Va for officer's training. Prior to his leaving Quantico, he was commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Marie corps. During World War Ii, Ralph participated in the Saipan and Iwo Jima landings. He was among the few who survived an early landing at Iwo Jima. At the end of the war, Ralph fulfilled a deep ambition when he became a regular officer of the Marine Corps and decided to make the Marine Corps his life's work. He was married November 24, 1946 to Florence Hickman of Coin, Ia. To this union two daughters were born, Katherine Lee, 5, and Martha Louise, 1. From 1947 to 1949, Ralph served in the Pacific on the island of Guam and later that year he returned to the US where he served in three responsible positions. Upon joining Camp Pendleton, he was assigned to the Third Amphibious Tractor battalion and assumed command of this battalion on October 18, 1955. He accepted his new and added responsibility proudly and commanded the battalion in the finest tradition of the U.S. Marine Corps. He gave his life on November 15, 1955, during early morning maneuvers of his landing crafts. Survivors include his wife, Florence, daughters, Kathy and Martha, his parents and one sister, Mrs John (Gene Earle) Pace and husband and family. Military rites were conducted by Navy Captain R.E. Sherwood Nov 16 at the Ranch House Chapel, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in New Market November 21. Rev Frank Matthews conducted the service.
