Shumate, were Monday evening of this week shocked and grieved to hear of her death, which occurred at the family home in this city late that afternoon and which resulted from a heart attack. Mrs. Shumate was a daughter of the late Edward and Sarah Crosslin Goodman, and was a native of Saline County, being born at the family home, four and one-half miles south of Gilliam, and at the time of her death was aged 71 years, 10 months and 29 days. She was united in marriage to James O. Shumate October 6, 1887, and three years ago the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. For many years they had been residents of Slater, and the couple had occupied the present family home for the past 35 years. Mrs. Shumate united with the Fish Creek Baptist church when a young girl, later transferring her membership to the First Baptist Church of Slater and during her entire life was active in church work. She was also a loyal member of the Royal Neighbors and of the Pythian Sisters and took an active part in both organizations. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Inis Montgomery, of Slater, and Mrs. Stella Yancey of Jefferson City; two half brothers, J. E. Goodman, of Marshall and C. F. Goodman of Slater, besides eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and other relatives and a great many friends. The funeral services, in charge of Dr. F. O. Criminger, were held at the Baptist church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and burial was made in the Slater City Cemetary. Out-of-town relatives who were here to attend the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Piper, of Washington, D.C., Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Yancy, of Jefferson City, Mrs. Jimmie Charleston, of St. Louis; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Montgomery and children of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ordway of Kansas City, Kansas; Mrs. Oda Martin, of Marshall; Mrs. Mollie Doan, of Marshall; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pratt, Mrs. Earl Weinrich and Mrs. Nettie Yowell, of Marshall; Mrs. James Striegel of Higginsville, and Mrs. L. L. Richardson, of Kansas City.
