Fletcher Somers, and one of the best known and most highly respected matrons of the community, died suddenly in the McCready Hospital Friday morning of last week. She had been a patient in the Hospital for only three days, having been carried there suffering with a paralytic stroke. She was 87 years of age. Mrs. Somers was born in the old Holland home between Hopewell and Marion, in 1863, the daughter of the late John H. and Elizabeth Stevenson Holland. After her marriage she moved to Crisfield and has resided here ever since. She was a highly intelligent woman, soft spoken, very courteous, and an energetic crusader for good in the community. For many years she was an officer and member of the Womens Christian Temperance Union and devoted much of her time to a fight for temperance. She also took an active and leading part in many civic activities, and with other women of the community helped in the establishment of the first hospital here, of a public library, and in other civic improvements. Mrs. Somers was a leading member of St. Peters Methodist Church, one of the oldest churches in the community, and attended services there regularly as long as her health permitted. She was a descendant of prominent Somerset county families, many of whom were large real estate owners and successful agriculturists as well as members of various professions. Mrs. Somers was a great reader and a fluent writer. The "Times" has often published letters and communications from her pen, most of which pointed out evils that needed to be remedied and others in praise of people and things which added value to community life. For some years she had lived quietly at her home on Main street, occupying her time with reading of current events and writing for publication from time to time. Her greatest interest in late years was in temperance and in matters affecting the church she loved so well, old St. Peters. She rested at her late home on Main street until Monday, when funeral services were held in St. Peters church at 2.00, p.m. conducted by the pastor, Rev. L. L. Knotts. Interment was in the adjoining churchyard. She is survived by one son, John C. Somers of Crisfield, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two nephews.
