SOMERS IS CLAIMED BY DEATH Prominent Crisfield Physician Dies Friday Morning After an illness of several weeks of a complication of diseases, Dr. Jacob Fletcher Somers, died at his home on Main Street in this city yesterday (Friday) morning. He was 71 years of age. Dr. Somers, besides being one of the leading physicians of Somerset county, was one of its most prominent citizens, and took an active interest in all public matters. After completing the course prescribed for the public schools of his home community, he entered Western Maryland College at Westminster and graduated from that institution in 1881. Later he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland. After completing his course in medicine, Dr. Somers located in Crisfield and soon became one of the leading physicians of Crisfield and Somerset county. He also opened a drug store on Main Street and conducted the business until his death. Dr. Somers came from one of the oldest families of Somerset county, being the son of the late Michael Somers, one of the largest landholders of his day. He was an ardent Democrat and, being a fluent speaker, was often heard on the hustings in advocacy of the candidates of his party. In 1894 he was married to Miss Manie Holland, daughter of the late John H. Holland, also one of the leading citizens of Somerset county. To this union was born one son, John Clarence Somers, who for a number of years has been associated with his father in conducting the apothecary business. Dr. Somers was a member of the Somerset Medical Society and was always active in its affairs, having served both as Secretary and President of that organization. He was a member of the medical staff of the McCready Memorial Hospital. Besides his widow and son, deceased is survived by four brothers, John T., Lawrence Bates, Charles W. and George H. Somers, all of Crisfield. Funeral services will be held at St. Peters M. E. Church of which he was a lifelong member Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. T. Graham. Interment will be in the cemetery nearby. Annamessick Lodge, No. 32, Knights of Pythias, of which he was a member, will attend the funeral in a body and conduct the services at the grave.
