Burton was born March 20, 1838, in Lawrence county, Kentucky. Departed this life December 3, 1908. Age 70 years, 8 months and 13 days. He was married to Dicae E. Williams November 11, 1862, in Douglas county, Kansas. To this union were born 7 children, 5 sons, and 2 daughters. The two daughters, Josie and Henreathe and one infant son precede their father to the better world. His wife and four sons, H. L., A. M., E. W. and M. E. Burton are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. Brother Burton came to Kansas in the year 1858. Was converted and united with the Union Baptist church in the year 1867 and has lived an humble, consistent Christian life, even amid the afflictions of the body and almost intense suffering for 15 months he seemingly would forget his pain and continually talk of the goodness of God and the great provision of salvation. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. R. Tucker, of Burlingame, assisted by Rev. Mrs. Evans, of Parkerville, pastor of the Burton church from which the funeral was conducted. The pall bearers were Monroe Kendall, L. W. Reeves, Banna Cress, Arthur Hallmark, Ala Cress, John Mitchell, nephews of the deceased. The church was very beautifully decorated with autumn leaves and potted plants. The casket was covered with floral offerings from loving friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Burton cemetery beside those who have gone on before, while the wife and children are bereft of a kind Christian husband father and the Union Baptist church sustains an irreparable loss but when we think of the last words we heard him speak that it was well with his soul, we bow in submission to the will of him who doeth all things well. "The day though weary yet passed by The night of sorrow dawned; When the cold mantle of death Then enshrouded her over. Though furrowed the brow By the cares of life The locks silvered with gray By faith he could view eternal day. While aged the form and frail the clay; The burden of life rolled away; And joys celestial brought to view To him who said to earth adieu." M. H. Burton was a perfect gentleman and a true, conscientious citizen who leaves the world better by having lived a long life of usefulness to his family and friends. He was a Christian of the highest type and the community and entire county have suffered a severe loss by his death.
