Maret Missunt was born in Numedal, Flesburg Parish, Norway in May 1823, where she grew to womanhood and where in 1842 she was married to Hellik G. Branson. Mrs. Branson's home was in Greenwood County but she was visiting her son in Cowley County when the end came. Maret Missunt was born in Numedal, Flesburg Parish, Norway in May 1823, where she grew to womanhood and where in 1842 she was married to Hellik G. Branson. In 1843 the husband and wife and infant son Gilbert, emigrated from Norway to America, landing in New York, July 4, 1843. They first settled in Wisconsin; later located in Minnesota and in the Spring of 1858 they came to Kansas and to Greenwood County, which was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Branson for more than forty years. Here they took a claim; here together they suffered the hardships and privations of a frontier life for the third time. Having helped to make Wisconsin and Minnesota states they came to Kansas in the days when the state was the bone of contention over which the pro and anti-slavery forces of the nation were struggling and they were among those pioneers who helped to make Kansas a free state. Mr. and Mrs. Branson first settled in what is now known as South Salem township and in 1866 they purchased a farm on Fall River adjoining Eureka which for forty years has been known as the Branson farm and which now belongs to the youngnest son, O.S. Branson. This place was the home of Mr. Branson until his death July 31, 1899, and was the home of Mrs. Branson until her death February 1, 1906. To Mr. and Mrs. Branson were born eleven children, ten sons and one daughter. Eight of the sons grew to namhood; two sons and the daughter died in infancy. The following sons survive their parents; H.R. and A.L. Branson living in Cowley County, Kansas; H.M. Branson residing in San Diego, California; S.F. Branson's home is in Grant County, Oregon and O.S. Branson resides in the old home near Eureka. At the age of fourteen years, after the thorough instruction customary in her native land, Maret Missunt was admitted to full membership in the Lutheran Church by confirmation and she honored that confession by all times living a Christian life consistent with her early teachings. She was one of the pioneer mothers to whom this state owns a debt which can never be paid except by holding her name, and those of her kind, in grateful memory. She leaves five stalwart sons wothy to bear the name she gave them, worthly because of her teachings. By them she will always be held in rememberance as examplifing most of those things which are best in life. Funeral services were held at the family residence Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. A.J. Evenson and Rev. C.B. Wells. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. From Eureka Herald 8 February 1906 page 1
