Mrs. Harry Bousser of this city and her sister, Mrs. Alex Armour of Bentley returned last Wednesday night from a long and tiresome journey to the Canadian Northwest, were they went after the five children of their recently deceased sister, Mrs. Margaret Redinger Whittle who was the wife of Arthur C. Whittle, for a long time resident of the Bentley neighborhood. In their travel, which kept them away from home about ten days, the ladies covered a distance of about three thousand miles. They experienced no trouble of any kind in their outward trip to Wolf, Saskatchewan, Canada, which is about eight hundred miles northwest of Winnipeg, and at which place the Whittle family had established a happy home only to be broken up by the death of Mrs. Whittle, who was a general favorite among the numerous children of Mr. and Mrs. John Redinger. On the return trip, however, Mrs. Bousser and Mrs. Armour, with the five small children met with all kinds of red tape in Winnipeg at the hands of the immigration officials. These offi-cials, ever on the alert to see that no persons who were likely to ever become a public charge on the part of the people of the United States, and they were our own officials, questioned the ladies at length and required them to show, as best they could, without having been previously provided with identification papers, to prove their identities and to show sufficient money to enable them to reach their intended home. This they were finally able to do without missing a train connection or being obliged to have the officials telegraph to Halstead. The five Whittle children have fallen into a happy and comfortable condition of circumstances in view of the great loss they sustained by the death of their mother, who as they grow older, will learn to have been one of the most beloved children of Harvey Co. Their grand-parents were first to declare that they should be well cared for, and they are amply able, in a financial way, to back up that declaration. The sisters and other relatives were equally willing to extend the helping hand, with the result that all five of the children are to taken care of within the family circle. [Irene] aged ten and Marguerite, aged [thirteen], are to become part of the Alex Armour family home in Bentley. Harold, aged eight and Arthur aged six are to become part of the family circle in the Harry Bousser home. The baby of a few months, who is named Roland, will become a permanent and most welcome inmate of the heretofore childless home of J. P. Redinger in Lakin township. Here he bids fair to grow to manhood and in time may develop into one of the substantial men of affairs in that part of the community. This bit of family history and our comments thereon, may or may not be of interest to a few of our readers, but the prominence of the parties interested, and the high esteem in which they are held by the editor, prompts us to extend this bit of news which might have been covered in a half dozen lines. It is our safe guess, however, that if the copies of this paper which fall into the hands of the family are preserved for twenty years, that they will be highly prized by the five little folks who are no longer to know the tender love and care of their own mother. ============================================================== A few areas in the above newspaper article were unreadable and have been reconstructed within square brackets "[ ]" from other sources: Although the section telling which family took which children is obscured in the original microfilm, there is a short section about the Whittle tragedy in the Redinger Family History written by three of the daughters of Mrs. Sophie Kate (Redinger) Armour. The following is from John Redinger, Sophia Armour's Father, written by Mildred (Armour) Schneider, Germaine (Armour) Williams and Aileen (Armour) Schulze, in 1970. Her [Sophie Kate Armour'] youngest sister [Margaret Whittle] went with her husband [Arthur C. Whittle] and 4 children to Canada, where she died at the birth of her 5th child [Roland]. Mother [Sophie Kate Armour] and her sister Josie [Josephine Bousser], who lived in Halstead, went to Canada on the train and brought the 5 children back. Two of the children lived with our mother [Sophie Kate Armour] for several years. Two lived with Aunt Josie, and the baby was raised by a distant cousin. Further research indicates that the two girls, Marguerite Lucille Redinger (born May 2, 1913, aged 13) and Irene Redinger (aged 10) where the two children that lived in the Alex and Sophie Kate Armour home. The two boys, Harold (aged eight) and Arthur (aged six) as stated above had become part of the family circle in the Harry Bousser home. The distant cousin J. P. Redinger in Lakin township who adopted Roland is not clearly identified, but he is buried in the Halstead Cemetery with many of the other Redinger family that stayed in Harvey, Kansas. ==================================== Add'l Information from Anita Dorothy (Armour) Henderson: The two boys, Arthur and Harold, lived with Aunt Josephine for several years. The girls, Margarite and Irene, lived in Bentley with James Alexander and Sophie Kate Armour for 3-4 years.
