Bluffton, Indiana Bluffton Chronicle Wednesday, January 24, 1917 – P2C4 Mrs. Philip Shadle Dead At The Age Of 88 A companionship of over 71 years terminated Friday with the death of Mrs. Philip Shadle at her home near Mt. Zion. Mr. and Mrs. Shadle were married in 1845, coming to Wells County three years later, and are numbered among the esteemed pioneer citizens of Chester township. Mr. Shadle is reported to be in feeble health, and as he has been fully informed of his wife's condition preceding her death, the loss of the one who has been a faithful helpmate to him for over seen decades, has been a severe blow to him. Mrs. Shadle was a sufferer from paralysis for the last three weeks, sustaining a stroke as the culmination of a long period of increasing disability. She was growing steadily weaker ever since she was stricken, and her death yesterday was fully expected by those in attendance at her bedside. She passed away at 9 o'clock on Friday morning. The decedent was born Margaret Donnelly on January 14, 1825[sic-1829], the daughter of John and Fannie (Singer) Donnelly, both of whom were natives of Pennsylvania. She was born in Dauphin County, Penna., and moved with her parents to Wayne County, O., in 1835. Her marriage to Mr. Shadle took place in Wayne County on August 7, 1845 and they remained there until 1848, when they came to Wells County and settled in what is now known as Chester township. Mr. Shadle's parents, Philip and Mary Shadle, had moved to this county in the preceding year and had already begun to clear their land. Mr. and Mrs. Shadle entered a 55-acre homestead, making their home with his parents during their first year here. Their combined efforts resulted in a rapid increase in their material fortunes and they soon became numbered among the substantial citizens of their community. Mr. and Mrs. Shadle were the parents of fifteen children and of those seven have preceded their mother in death. The eight who survive are William, Newton, Reason, Samuel, John and Eli Shadle, Mrs. Lusetta Godfrey and Mrs. Ada Starr, all of them being residents of this county. Mrs. Shadle also leaves two brothers, both of whom live in Ohio. Before their advanced years made it impossible for them to go about, Mr. and Mrs. Shadle were active members of the United Presbyterian church of Warren. The funeral is to be held on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home three miles southeast of Mt. Zion. (Thanks to David Huffman for OBIT)
