PHILIP SHADLE, an active and enterprising farmer of Chester Township, is a native of Pennsylvania, born in Lebanon County, April 14, 1825. His parents, Philip and Mary (McGlade) Shadle, were natives of the same State, the father born in Center County, the mother having been brought from Ireland to Dauphin County by her parents when two years old. They were married in Dauphin County, and subsequently removed to Lebanon County, where they made their home for thirty-five years. They then removed to Wayne County, Ohio, in 1836, and one year later removed to Holmes County, Ohio, where they resided from the spring of 1838 until the fall of 1847. The father then traded his Ohio property for 110 acres of wild land in Wells County, Indiana, to which place he removed. Procuring a cabin to move in he went to hewing logs for a hewed log house, he being a carpenter by trade, this being the first house of the kind built in that section of the county. Philip Shadle, the subject of this sketch, grew to manhood in Wayne and Holmes counties, Ohio, and was married in Wayne County, Ohio, August 7, 1845, to Miss Margaret Donnelly, a native of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of John and Fannie (Singer) Donnelly, who were also natives of the State of Pennsylvania. They left their native State for Wayne County, Ohio, about 1835, and in 1850 removed to Holmes County, where they lived until their death. Mr. and Mrs. Shadle have had fifteen children born to them, of whom twelve yet survive: Mary Jane, wife of Winfield Venham; Zilla, wife of J. M. Venham, now living in Sacramento Valley, California; William; Newton; Lusetta, wife of John Godfrey; Reason A., Ellen, Samuel, John, Eli, Oscar and Ada. Those deceased are: Chambers, Lissa and Philip. Mr. Shadle came to Wells County with his family the year following his father's settlement in the county, and located on a tract of fifty-five acres of the old homestead. The first year he made his home with his parents, and the following year put up an addition to the old house. His mother died in January, 1855, his father surviving until 1874. He followed carpentering the greater part of his life, our subject attending to the duties of the farm. Mr. Shadle has always been an industrious citizen, and since coming to the county has cleared much land, and is now the owner of 183 acres, of which 150 acres is cleared, and this, with the exception of about twenty-five acres, has been done by himself with the assistance of his sons. Mr. and Mrs. Shadle are members of the United Presbyterian church at Warren. Mr. Shadle has always taken an active interest in the public affairs of his township or county, and has served his township efficiently as trustee in all six years, filling that position when considerable tact was required to bring the finances of the township to a proper condition. In politics he is a Republican, and for a number of years was chairman of the Republican committee in Chester Township. He is a prominent and influential man in Chester Township, and during his long residence in the county has gained the confidence and respect of all who know him. Portrait of Philip Shadle [1887, p.744] ---------- Bluffton, Indiana Evening News Monday, March 31, 1919 – P1C6 Philip Shadle Died Sunday Evening Aged 93 Chester Township Pioneer Had Been Resident Of County 70 Years Philip Shadle, who was in his ninety third year, and who had been a resident of Wells County for 70 years, passed away about 7 o'clock Sunday evening, at the home of his son Samuel, in Chester township, two miles south and one-half mile east of Mt. Zion. His death was due to the infirmities of age, the direct and immediate cause being assigned to hardening of the arteries. The decedent, Philip Shadle, was born in Lebanon County, Pa., on April 14, 1820[sic-1825], and would have been 94 years of age on the 14th of next month. He was a son of Philip and Mary (McGlade) Shadle, and moved with his parents to Wayne County, Ohio, in 1836, and one year later they moved to Holmes County, Ohio, and resided there until 1847, at which time the elder Shadle traded his farm in Ohio for 110 acres of land in Chester township, this county, and moved to this county with his wife. The following year Philip Shadle, the son, the pioneer whose death occurred Sunday evening, also came to Wells County with his wife, having claimed as his bride Miss Margaret Donnelly, in a ceremony that took place August 7, 1845, in Wayne County, Ohio. The latter couple lived the first year they spent in this county on the farm with his parents but the following year they moved into a house of their own, built by the sturdy pioneer. His mother died in 1855[sic-1853] and his father in 1874. To Philip Shadle the second and his wife were born fifteen children, of whom eight are living, as follows: Samuel, John, Newton, Eli, Reason, and William Shadle, all of this county, Mrs. Lucretta Godfrey, wife of John Godfrey, living near Liberty Center, and Mrs. Ada Starr, wife of Frank Starr, living near Poneto. Philip Shadle and his wife were among the organizers of the United Presbyterian church at Warren. She preceded him in death, having passed away two years ago. Mr. Shadle had always been prominent in the various walks of life in his township, and served six years as trustee of the township. The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Mt. Zion U. B. church, and burial will be in the Snow Cemetery. (Thanks to David Huffman for OBIT)
