Death came suddenly from a heart attack following several months of declining health. She had previously been in good health for her age. Mrs. Hunter celebrated her 102nd birthday August 25. She was the oldest person in La Porte City and community and one of the oldest residents of Iowa. During her long years of living she was noted for her thoughtfulness of others and her optimistic and hopeful attitude toward life. Even during her last years, when she was totally blind, she was uncomplaining and kept up an interest in things about her and in world events as related on radio news reports. She was mentally alert to the last. Until about seven years ago she lived alone and did her own work. Oldest in Family Mrs. Hunter was the oldest of a family of four boys and two girls, of George and Minerva Riggle. She was born on her parent’s farm near Shellsburg and attended rural school and rural church of the United Brethren denomination of which she was a member until her death. In her youth she assisted with the pioneer tasks of dropping corn into hills by hand, binding grain, hoeing sugar cane, cooking sorghum, making candles, drying apples, piecing quilts and numerous other tasks that filed a day beginning at 4 or 4 o’clock in the morning and ending after dark. She also saw Indians journeying through each winter and her uncles returning home from the Civil War in their blue uniforms. On February 16, 1875 she married John Hunter at Vinton. They farmed in the Shellsburg vicinity until moving to a farm near Mt. Auburn in 1892. About five years later they came to the La Porte City community and farmed in Spring Creek township until Mr. Hunter died in 1930. A year later she moved to La Porte City, where she resided until her death. Surviving are 87 descendants including three sons, ___ Hunter and John Hunter, La Porte City and Emory Hunter, Montezuma; two daughters, Mrs. Dan Brennan and Mrs. Katherine Abel, 23 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Jacob Riggle of Corwith who is 100 years old and George Riggle of Shellsburg, who is 82. Preceding her in death besides her husband were one daughter, one son, two brothers and one sister. Services Monday The body was transferred from the Johannsen Funeral home Saturday to her own home, where a prayer service was held Monday afternoon before the funeral services in the Methodist church at 2 o’clock. Services were conducted by Rev. D.R. Corrick, church pastor and Rev. C.O. Jensen, former pastor of the church. Cliff Burr, accompanied by Mrs. Burr, sang “The Old Rugged Cross”. Casket bearers were grandsons, Verne Hunter, Postville, Wis.; Merle Bunce and Dean Brennan, Waterloo and George Abel, Don Brennan and Francis Brennan, La Porte City. Interment was made in the family lot in West View cemetery.
