Thus can we truly say of our death mother, Mrs. James O'Connor, who the Lord has called from our midst to the sweet land of bliss. Mrs. James O'Connor was born Nov. 21, 1855, in Peoria, Illinois. At an early age she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, with her parents, where fifty years and eleven months ago she was united in marriage to Mr. James O'Connor. This union was blessed with eleven children, four sons and seven daughters, nine of who still survive her. The oldest daughter, Mary, died at the age of three, and Celia, Mrs. C. Dillard, died seven years ago. Well did Mrs. James O'Connor understand what pioneer life meant, for about forty years ago she and her husband moved to Pocahontas county. Since that time she has lived on the same farm nine miles southwest of Pocahontas. Mrs. James O'Connor's death was not a sudden and unprovided one. For the last five years, we might say, she had been an invalid. But it was not until five weeks ago, when she was stricken with paralysis, that her condition was considered serious. From that time on all medical skill and care was unable to defeat death. She realized that the end was near and after being fortified with all the rites of the church, she was resigned and willing to depart this life. When death came her loving and devoted son, Arthur and daughter, Agnes, were at her bedside. The funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church Wednesday, March 21. A Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated with Rev. A J. Wagener as celebrant; Rev. Lynch of Manson, as deacon, and Rev. Theobald of Rolfe, as sub-deacon. The Christian Mother's Society of which she was a member, attended the Solemn Requiem Mass in a body. Interment was made in the Sacred Heart cemetery east of town. The pallbearers were mostly all early settlers and old neighbors; Michael Linnan, Jay Murphy, Henry Shade, Patrick Murphy, William Lieb and Thos. Reilly.
