She was a graduate of Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. She was a dramatic reader of considerable ability. She joined the Christian Church in childhood and was prominent in all church work, acting as teacher and Sunday School superintendent. She cared for her parents in their declining years and until their deaths. She owned one half the Burns' homestead. She managed her farm in a successful manner. She never married, and resided with her brother." --------- Ottumwa Courier March 12, 1953: Life-Long Republican Worker Receives Honorary Membership At a meeting of the Republican Women's club of Wapello county held at the home of Mrs. Seth S. Barker Tuesday afternoon, Miss Margaret Burns of route 7, was presented with a scroll making her a life member of the Ottumwa chapter of the Iowa Council of Republican Women. A lifelong republican and worker for the party, Miss Burns, who is 82, was graduated from Drake university. She planned to teach and do chautauqua work, but because of her mother's frail health, returned to her home to assist on the farm. She still lives in the house in which she was born. Miss Burns' parents became members of the republican party when it was organized. Her mother, Cynthia Ball Burns was, she recalls, the first horseback rider at the state fair. For many years Miss Burns has served as committeewoman for Dahlonega township and resigned only this spring because it was too strenuous. "But I'm like Hoover," she said, "I'm still in there helping the party." Alert and vitally interested in the current campaign for governor in Iowa, Miss Burns in also watching with great interest the McCarthy-army dispute in Washington. "I do not like it," she stated very firmly. "We have a good president, and a good congress and they can take care of the situation. It is not a personal, one-man affair." Asked if she thinks the hearings will hurt the party, she commented that she hopes they will be over before they do. Still campaigning for her party and her candidates, Miss Burns expects to continue to do so. She has voted at every election since women received the vote and was one of those who helped them get the franchise to vote.
