Read More	Beloved Emerson Woman Passes Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Margaret Whitney in Emerson Baptist Church Sunday p.m. Margaret Lawton, daughter of Obediah and Agnes Brown Lawton was born September 25, 1859 in Warren County, Illinois, and passed away August 15, 1935 at the home of her son, Clarence in this city, at the age of 75 years, 10 months, and 20 days. On March 24, 1883, she was united in marriage to Emmett Whitney in Appanoose County. He husband preceded her in death September 19, 1925, after a happy married life of more than 45 years. To them was born four children, 2 boys and 2 girls. One boy and one girl died in infancy. Those living are Bernice Harriett Bowman of Council Bluffs and Mr. Clarence Whitney of Emerson. She also leaves to mourn her passing three grandchildren, Mrs. Margaret Bowman Booten and Clarice Bowman of Council Bluffs, and Ruth Whitney of Emerson, also two great grandchildren. Mrs. Whitney was a member of a family of eleven children, seven of whom survive; R. F. and James H. Lawton of Brazil, Iowa, W. C. and Davis W. Lawton of Mystic, Iowa, Obediah T. Lawton of Fargo, North Dakota, Mrs. Elizabeth Moss of Buhl, Idaho, and Mrs. Lena Jarod of Corydon, Iowa. The family came to Centerville, Iowa in 1881 and from there moved to Red Oak in 1883, following which they came to Emerson. Mrs. Whitney was one of the pioneers of Emerson community, having lived here for nearly half a century. On May 24, 1894, a little over 41 years ago, she united with the Baptist Church and to this church she was a faithful and devoted member up to the time of her death. During her life in Emerson, Mrs. Whitney made many friends, and this entire community bows in grief because of her passing, and yet they gladly grant her the rest to which she is entitled after so busy and useful a life. Funeral services were held Saturday with the pastor, Rev. J. f. Stille, in charge. A quartet consisting of Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Cheney, Mrs. W. H. Cramer, and C. D. Greenwood sang with Mrs. H. E. Greenwood at the piano. Those acting as pallbearers were Ivan Salmons, C. E. Anderson, Mart Shannon, A. W. Shannon, W. H. Cramer, and Art Cole. Flower ladies were Mrs. A. W. Shannon, Mrs. Carrie Bidwell, and Mrs. Otis Butcher. Interment was made in the Emerson Cemetery. Glenwood Opinion Tribune, August 22, 1935, page 3
