At the age of 16 she, with her parents, bid adieu to their fatherland, departing to the land of the free. After an adventurous journey this family made their home in Washington, Missouri. Here Miss Maria worked faithfully as domestic for six years. In 1864 she entered the bonds of wedlock with Mr. F. W. Pieper. Mrs. Maria Clara Pieper was born May 8, 1842, in Heithoefen, Germany, where she received her education. At the age of 16 she, with her parents, bid adieu to their fatherland, departing to the land of the free. After an adventurous journey this family made their home in Washington, Missouri. Here Miss Maria worked faithfully as domestic for six years. In 1864 she entered the bonds of wedlock with Mr. F. W. Pieper. Three years later the young couple ventured into Kansas, traveling by rail as far as Lawrence, from where they continued their journey to Humboldt in a stage coach. They settled on the farm well known as the Van Fossen place; here they lived twenty-three years under the weight of hard labor. In 1890 they removed to the farm that is today the property of F. W. Pieper. For twenty long years they labored and prospered on this farm. They made their last change in 1910, withdrawing from the country life to a life of retirement in Humboldt. Mrs. Pieper was the victim of a sickness by the repeated attacks of which she suffered untold pain. From childhood she was very ambitious, which virtue did not fail her until she departed this life Wednesday, January 5, 1916. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church, Rev. W. T. Vogel officiating. Phillipians 1:23 served as the text. Mrs. Pieper was the mother of eleven children. She leaves as mourners a husband, six children and five grandchildren. The death-toll called her to rest at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 27 days
