Maria (Segboer) Vandervalk was born in Fynaar, Holland on March 3, 1896. Maria and her late husband Jacobus Hendrinus Vandervalk, along with their four sons, arrived in Halifax on March 10, 1924 from Holland and road the train to Monarch, Alberta where they worked for a short while before buying a quarter section of land North of Fort Macleod. They farmed there until 1945, when they sold the farm and moved to Calgary, Alberta. A few years later, they moved to Nelson, B.C., and then to Balfour, B.C. Jacobus predeceased her in 1964. Maria continued to live in B.C. for a few years, and then moved back to Port Macleod. Maria has spent the last several years on Claresholm. Her greatest joy was her family. Maria loved her garden and her needlework. Maria is survived by five sons: Jeorge (Jeuny) of Claresholm, Alberta, Jack (Mary) of Great Falls, Montana , Bill (Barbara) of Skamania, Washington, Bram of Fort Macleod, Alberta, John of Nobleford, Alberta; one daughter, Betty Ashley of Lethbridge; 25 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren.
