So, in 1885, Marie's parents, Frank and Magdalena (Horacek) Nechanicky decided to find a new home in America. The Nechanicky's came to Tama by train, and upon arriving, found themselves lost in a foreign land. Luckily, a man named John Salacek took them in for the night, and the next day took them out to John Nechanicky's farm east of Toledo. This was Marie's uncle, who was already living here. It was common in those days for unmarried girls to find employment as domestic servants. And this is what she did. By living with a family in Toledo for two years, she also learned to speak English. At the age of 17 years, on September 19, 1887, she became the wife of Anton Kubik. Anton owned a farm southwest of Clutier in Carroll Township. They lived on this farm located on the east half of the northeast quarter of section 35. They had seven children. Their names were: Mary, Anton, Blanche, Anna, Agnes, Fred, and Rose. After the passing of Marie's parents, the Kubik's moved to the farm which her father, Frank, had bought in 1890. This farm was on the east half of the southwest quarter of section 2, also in Carroll Township. They didn't live there permanently though, because on March 19,1906, her husband Anton died. When Anton's estate was settled, Mrs. Kubik decided to buy a 160 acre farm in Crystal township. Part of this farm is still owned by a grandson today. This farm is located on the southeast quarter of section 25. By 1907, the oldest daughter, Mary, had already married. She became Mrs. Rudolph Sevcik. In 1912, the daughter, Blanche, married Bohumile Chalupnik, who became known as Amiel Halupnick. In 1914, three of the children married. Anna married Earl LeFevre, Anton married Rose Madera, and Agnes married George Zmolek. At this time Anton and his wife took over the farming operation, and his mother and the two youngest children moved to Traer. While living in Traer, Marie gained a reputation as a nurse and midwife. Many times she was called to assist with births in the community. The local physicians came to rely on her nursing services too. She was never too busy to deny a request to assist the sick; she cared for the patient and did the housework too. Being present for the births of most of her grandchildren as well, Marie became "Grandma Kubik" to all. In 1919, her son Anton died, and so she returned to her farm with Fred and Rose. Rose married Adolph Zmolek in 1921, and Fred married Eleanor Zmolek in the same year. Grandma stayed on the farm with Fred and his family. In 1934, Fred's family moved to a new farm back in Carroll Township and Grandma lived with them until 1938. Then she moved to Clutier to live with Rudolph and Mary Sevcik who had retired from farming. Rudolph died in 1939, and Grandma continued to live with her daughter until Mary's death in 1964. During her years in Clutier, she continued her activities as a nurse; caring for "old people" who were actually younger than herself, and visiting the shut-ins. Over the next ten years Grandma spent time staying with her remaining children Blanche, Fred, and Rose. May 23, 1967 was an unfortunate day for Grandma. While enjoying the garden on Fred's farm, an over friendly dog knocked her over, fracturing her hip. This required surgery and seven weeks of hospitalization. This was probably the first time she had ever been in a hospital. Though was probably nearly a hundred years of age, Grandma was eventually able to walk again. Grandma was always a faithful member of the Roman Catholic Church. She was thankful for all her blessings, especially her good health that she enjoyed for so many years. Her entire life was spent in simplicity and poverty, yet she always seemed to be happy. Eventually, Grandma resided at Sunnycrest Nursing Center in Dysart. She passed into her eternal happiness on March 6, 1979.
