He was the son of Peter Kuhl and Louisa Wattier Kuhl Schleis. His parents were natives of Wisconsin and were married in 1883 at Jericho, Wisconsin. Kuhl was born September 7, 1887 at Earling. He died July 2, 1965 and is buried in Des Moines. He was the son of Peter Kuhl and Louisa Wattier Kuhl Schleis. His parents were natives of Wisconsin and were married in 1883 at Jericho, Wisconsin. Then they came to Earling where they operated a general and hardware store for 25 years. They also resided in Templeton and Mapleton for several years. Franklin's father was born January 9, 1850 and died December 1, 1910. His mother was born June 7, 1864 and died April 17, 1955. Both are buried in Earling. Franklin was educated in Earling and also attended normal college at Woodbine. After college he worked in mercantile stores in Mapleton and Templeton. He married Marie Loehr on January 21, 1912 at Westphalia. She was born in Westphalia on March 16, 1888. She died November 13, 1942 and is buried in Defiance. She was the daughter of Fred and Anna Langenfeld Loehr. Marie's father was born January 26, 1850 in Wisconsin and died November 13, 1923. Her mother was born December 6, 1851 in Prussia. Both are buried in Westphalia. Marie and Nick Loehr were sister and brother, while Franklin and Nick's wife, Leonora, were sister and brother. Cleta, born November 8, 1912, married Charles Harold Nelson in November 1933 in Council Bluffs. They have two sons, Eugene and James, and live in Arp, Texas. Lillian, born May 9, 1918, married Kenneth Burke June 21, 1937 at Avoca, Iowa and live in Powell, Wyoming. They have six children, Lawrence, Nancy, Michael, Dennis, Judith, and David, and they have 13 grandchildren. Eldred, born May 11, 1920, married Audrey Sandon and they have two sons, Randy and Steve. They live in Indianapolis, Indiana. LeRoy, born July 2, 1923, and his wife, Virginia, have two children, Linda and Curt, and they live in Des Moines. In February of 1912, Franklin and brother-in-law, Nick Loehr, bought the Rethlefsen General Store in Defiance. They were partners in this store for 16 years. He sold his share to Nick Loehr and moved his family to Avoca, where he operated a store for several years. He then moved to Des Moines where he operated a neighborhood grocery store. In December 1943, Franklin married Nydia Hall in Des Moines. She died in 1980.
