The Rev. Dennis Schlossin officiated and burial was in Madison cemetery. Marie Berth, daughter of Frederick and Wilhelmina Hahn, was born August 21, 1885, in Putnam township, Fayette county. She was baptized in infancy by Pastor G. H. Fuehr of St. Sebald and was instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Oelwein by Pastor G.J. Zeilinger in 1899. In 1904 she moved to Aurora and worked in the general merchandise store until 1914. On Jan. 1, 1914 she was united in marriage with Frederick T. Scharff, the Rev. Carl Remboldt officiating. hey spent a few months in waterloo and one winter in Wisconsin after which they returned to Aurora, residing here since that time. They were the parents of two sons, Paul Frederick and Carl Leo. Mrs. Scharff was a life-long member of the St. Paul American Lutheran church of Aurora. She served as organist and as Sunday school superintendent for several years, and has been an active member of the Dorcas and Mission societies for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, First Lieutenant Paul F. Scharff of the air force, who was killed in action over Germany on May 28, 1944; two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Schultz and Mrs. Jacob Kraft; and three brothers, Frederick, Henry and Albert. Surviving are her husband, Frederick of Aurora; one son Carl of Aurora; two sisters, Mrs. Frederick Schultz of Lamont and Mrs. William Finck of Aurora; one brother, Arthur of Lamont; and for grandchildren, Paul Frederick, Nora Marie, Carl Ernest and wade Allen, Aurora. (Obit in the Independence Conservative, May 8, 1953) * * * MRS. FRED SCHARFF IS DEAD AT AURORA AURORA--Mrs. Frederick Scharff, 67, died Thursday night at her home here after a three day illness. She suffered a stroke Tuesday. Decesed was born Marie Hahn, daughter of Frederick and Wilhelmina Hahn, on a farm near Aurora August 21, 1886. She clerked in stores here before her marriage to Frederick Scharff Jan. 1, 1914. The couple lived in Waterloo and in Wisconsin a short time before locating in Aurora. Surviving are her husband, a son Carl, Aurora; two sisters, Mrs. Will Fink, Aurora, and Mrs. Fred Schultz, Lamont; one brother,Arthur Hahn, Aurora; four grandchildren. Preceding her were a son, Lt. Paul Scharff, killed over Germany in 1944 while serving in the air force; her parents, two brothers, Henry and Albert, and two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Craft aqnd Mrs. Charles Schultz.
