MARIE JENSEN Esteemed Woman is Summoned July 6, After Six Months’ Illness Mention was made in these columns last week of the death of Mrs. Marie Jensen, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed women of this community, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Frerichs, northeast of town, in Portland Township, Monday morning, July 6, 1936, after an illness of about six months, aged 87 years, 9 months and 20 days. Previous to her final illness, “Grandma” Jensen as she was affectionately called by her many friends, had scarcely ever known a sick day in her long life. Marie Peterson was born in Denmark, September 16, 1848, where she grew to womanhood. In 1877 she was united in marriage with Severn Jensen. They came to America in 1880, first locating at Brownsdale, Minn. They came to Plymouth County, Iowa, about the year 1884, homesteading the farm in Portland Township where Mrs. Jensen spent the last years of her life. Mr. and Mrs. Jensen retired from the farm about the year 1910 and moved to Akron. Mr. Jensen lost his eyesight in the later years of his life and his wife’s tender devotion and care of her helpmate during this affliction s well remembered here by man acquaintances. She smoothed the darkened pathway of his life down to the hour of his death in 1920. Following her husband’s death, she moved back to the old homestead, in 1922, and has since resided there in the home of her daughter. She was reared in the Lutheran faith, but about the year, 1916 she united with the Christian church of Akron, and continued a faithful and helpful member of that communion through all these years. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother, and her helpfulness to others was an outstanding trait of her long and useful life. There are left to mourn the departure of this good woman, besides a host of friends, three children: Fred C. Jensen, of Belle Fourche, S. D.; Chris Jensen, of Alcester, S. D.; Mrs. Anna Frerichs, of Akron; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon of last week at 2:30 o’clock in the Christian church, of Akron, conducted by a former pastor, Rev. W. H. McDonald, of Merrill. There were two selections by a young people’s quartet, comprised of Mary Buret, Dorothy Scott, Albert Lee, Lemen and Kenneth Shoulerg; also a vocal solo by Albert Lee Lemen. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. Among the relatives and friends in attendance from a distance were: Fred Jensen and children, of Belle Fourche, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hendricks and children, of Chatsworth; Mrs. Reed and son, John, and Mrs. Liston, of Sioux City; Mrs. Lloyd Peck, of Hawarden. Akron Register Tribune Thursday, 1936 Akron, Iowa
