The ship she was on was quarantined because the ship ahead of them had smallpox. She stayed on the ship for six weeks off Ellis Island before they could come ashore. Her siblings were: John, Josepha Hadwiger, Anna, and Joseph. Marie worked as a maid for Episcopalian Bishop Graves. Julius's sister also worked there and that is how the couple met.
