Marilyn Joyce Maas was born July 11, 1930, in Beresford, South Dakota, the daughter of Warren and Lillian (Albers) Rasmussen. She attended school in Beresford and graduated from Beresford High School in 1947. After graduation she married the love of her life, Herbert Maas, at the First Baptist Church in Vermillion, South Dakota, on November 12, 1947. Herbert and Marilyn had five children together. The family lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Worthington, Minnesota, before moving to New Hampton in the late 1950's. Marilyn was a very dedicated bus driver for the New Hampton Community School District for 33 years, retiring in 2005. Marilyn loved driving her bus, not only on normal school routes, but dedicated many hours for field trips, music events, and sporting events, allowing her to travel/visit many places. All the children had a special place in her heart. They all knew her as "Grandma" or "Ma Maas." Marilyn loved following the Iowa Hawkeyes and New Hampton Chickasaws. She watched and listened to many games and could always be found in the bleachers wearing her Chickasaw gear and sporting a huge smile. While Marilyn lived at Kensington Assisted Living, she enjoyed visiting with people, being with friends, and spending hours putting puzzles together. As soon as she would finish one puzzle, she would have it framed and give it to a family or friend. Her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. She was so proud to be able to attend all of their celebrations. Marilyn will be remembered by all for her contagious smile and laugh and for having a kind and caring heart. Marilyn is survived by four daughters, Deborah (Darin) Thornton of Lawler, Iowa, Diana (Rodney) Pearce of New Hampton, Judy (Don) Ysbrand of Waverly, Iowa, and Janice (Michael) Miura of Atkins, Texas; one son, John (Raelene) Maas of New Hampton; ten grandchildren, Megan (Brady) Schmauss, Jocelyn (Kyle) Bouska, Matthew (Rachel) Ysbrand, Michelle (Justin) Bolton, Jessica Whitney, John (Shannon) Whitney, Michael Miura Jr, Jeremy Miura, Logan Maas, and Cameron Maas; six great-grandchildren and waiting for the arrival of another in November; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Eugene and James Rasmussen; and one grandson.
