She died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville where she had lived for the last two years. Marilyn Margaret Maas, the daughter of Harley F. Maas and Marion O. (Russell) Maas, was born April 11, 1932, in Terril. She received her education and graduated from Terril Consolidated School. On May 29, 1949, she was united in marriage with Ernest L. Baedke in Terril, where the couple farmed and raised their family. Following Ernie's retirement from farming in 1997, Marilyn and Ernie continued to live on the acreage. Marilyn was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terril and saw to it their five children were baptized, attended church, Sunday School and were confirmed. She sang in the church choir and was known as the 'hat lady' of a small singing group who traveled to area nursing homes to entertain the residents. Each hat she created had a theme and the residents loved to wear them as the girls sang to them. Marilyn loved music. She listened to music while working in the house, would sing along with a song on the car radio and played the piano for her own enjoyment. She longed to travel to the big cities to see musicals and stage plays. She bowled on league for several years and loved to read, bringing home a box full of books from her weekly trip to the library. Marilyn was an artist, expressing herself through her sewing, crocheting, knitting, seasonal floral arrangements and holiday decorations. Marilyn was truly a 'home maker'. She was great cook and baker - three meals a day, a couple of fried chickens for Sunday dinner with at least two pies every weekend, and the cookie jar was always filled with homemade chocolate chip cookies. She made great lunches for the corn-shelling, hay-baling, fieldwork help. She was a favorite with the kids' college friends and co-workers for her chocolate cake and enormous platters of homemade Christmas cookies and candies. Every birthday celebration was highlighted with her decorated cakes, strawberries, homemade chocolate sauce and, occasionally, homemade ice cream. Marilyn loved nature. She was often breaking new ground for more flowers and was famous for her huge vegetable garden which kept her and the family busy tilling, weeding, canning and freezing. The fruit room and freezers were full, ready to feast from during the long winters. She loved animals and birds. Marilyn kept the feeders full for the hummingbirds, wrens and goldfinch and would climb up into the haymow with the kids in search of new baby kitties. She took care of various animal 'babies'. She loved to fish; however, she was usually kept busy untangling the kids' lines, taking off the fish and re-baiting hooks. Marilyn was adventurous, playful, and encouraged and supported that spirit in the children's and grand-children's personal interests. Left to cherish Marilyn's memory are her husband, Ernest, of Terril; children, Anita Plucker and her husband, Mark, of Terril, Evan Baedke of Spirit Lake, Julie Miller and her husband, Michael, of Arnolds Park, Linda Jennings and her husband, John, of Spirit Lake and Neal Baedke and his wife, Deb, of West Des Moines; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one brother, Harlan Maas, and his wife, Evelene of Terril. She has been preceded in death by her parents.
