Read More	Longtime North Bend resident Marion "Mayme" Irene Laatsch died at Eastside Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound December 2 of natural causes. She was 95 years of age. Marion was born on September 24, 1912. As she liked to remind people, it was the same year the Titanic sank. Her birthplace was Hidden Brook Farms, the family homestead near Timberlake, South Dakota. She was one of five children, four girls and one boy, born to William Stanley Reynolds and Mary Josephine Bowen. She graduated high school in South Dakota and later attended business school in Chicago, and beauty school in Seattle. In 1934, she married Frank Laatsch. They gave birth to their first child, Sharon, in 1935. Soon after Sharon's birth during the "dirty thirties," Frank and Marion left the dust bowl of the Dakotas and moved to Eagle Creek, Washington, near Leavenworth. They later moved to the town of Leavenworth, where Marion first opened Marion's Beauty Shop. While living in Leavenworth, Marion was encouraged to move her business to North Bend by her supplier, Brown's Beauty Supply. The family packed up and moved in the early ‘40s and Marion set up shop in downtown North Bend. In 1951, the Laatschs bought the Thrasher farm located close to the foot of Mount Si. Marion's Beauty Shop was eventually moved to the farm and renamed The Country Curl. William Richard Laatsch, Frank and Marion's second child, was born in 1952. The Laatsch pig farm, as it was commonly known, was started in 1959. At its height, the farm had 900 hogs. Marion continued operating her beauty shop until 1964, when she decided to devote her time to her family and with helping her husband with the farm. The Laatschs continued raising pigs until 1986, the year Frank passed away. Marion then boarded horses on the farm for a number of years. Marion remained in her North Bend home until shortly before her death. She was a charter member of the Snoqualmie Valley Riding Club, which continues to the day. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, trail rides, and spending time with her family. She cut her own firewood until well into her 80s, and celebrated her 90th birthday by taking a horseback ride. Marion will be remembered for her sense of humor, generosity, practical jokes, and fun loving ways. Survivors include her son, William "Bill" (Sherry) Laatsch; grandsons, Byron (Robbie) Moore, Tevis Moore, Coen Laatsch; granddaughter, Frankie (Jim) Westlake; three great-grandsons, Jeremy Westlake and Tyler and Ryan Moore; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews on both sides of the Cascades; and many loving friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 10, at Flintoft's Funeral Home in Issaquah. A reception will follow at the Mount Si Senior Center in North Bend.
