Description	:	Marion L. Legan, age 80, of Persia, Iowa, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 5th, 2011, at The Life Care Center in Elkhorn, Neb., after a 5 1/2 month battle with pancreatic cancer. Marion, son of Ralph and Anna (Krohn) Legan was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1930, at his parents home in Persia. He was baptized and confirmed into the Trinity Lutheran Church of Persia. Legan, age 80, of Persia, Iowa, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 5th, 2011, at The Life Care Center in Elkhorn, Neb., after a 5 1/2 month battle with pancreatic cancer. Marion, son of Ralph and Anna (Krohn) Legan was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1930, at his parents home in Persia. He was baptized and confirmed into the Trinity Lutheran Church of Persia. Marion attended Pleasant Ridge and Spring Creek Country Schools, then graduated from Persia High School in 1949. In February of 1952, Marion was drafted into the Army. In July of 1952, he was married to LaVonne Graybill (daughter of Guy and Mary Graybill). Nine days later, he was shipped off to Korea and proudly served 18 1/2 months there as a radar operator with the 68th AAA Gun Battalion. Upon his return Marion and LaVonne purchased the John Koll farm just west of Persia and farmed for over 47 years. They were blessed with two children, Mary Ann and Rodney Lee. Along with farming, Marion worked for Walt Kuster at the Persia Champlain Gas Station for 21 years, drove a truck off and on for DL (Mike) Hughes and drove a Tri Center school bus for 3 years. He also served his community through the Farm Service Co-op Board, American Legion Post 314 – where he carried the American Flag for 35 years, the Building Committee at Community of Christ Church (formerly RLDS), President of the Valley View cemetery board (36 years), and the Persia Town Council (6 years). Marion's passions included traveling – together, he and LaVonne saw all 50 states, parts of Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. While in New Zealand, Marion was named an honorary Chief by the King of the Mayore Tribe. He never tired of a beautiful mountain range or seeing any of God's creatures in the wild. He enjoyed a great campfire, a slow waltz with LaVonne, and playing cards/marbles with friends. Marion was survived by his devoted wife, LaVonne, of Persia; daughter, Mary Herzberg (husband, Larry); and granddaughter Marla Olsen (husband, Tony); and great-grandson, Aiden, all of Omaha, Neb.; sister-in-law, Donna Yecha, of Omaha; and brother-in-law, CL (Sonny) Busch, of Persia; and a host of loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Anna Legan; son, Rodney; sisters, Kathleen (Pug) Busch and Lois Bradley. Visitation Tuesday, June 7th, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a short prayer service at 6 p.m., at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 8th, 2011, at 1 p.m., at the Community of Christ Church (formerly the R.L.D.S) in Persia. Burial will be at the Valley View Cemetery in Persia. Immediately following, lunch will be served at the new Persia Volunteer Fire Hall. The family requests that memorials be directed to either the American Legion Post 314 of Persia Iowa or the Persia Volunteer Fire Department. Marion will be remembered as a strong yet compassionate individual - a devoted and caring husband, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and cherished friend.
