Marion Kirschman, a daughter of John D. and Elizabeth (Seibel) Schlichenmayer was born on March 31, 1921 in Turtle Lake, North Dakota. She was the 8th. child born of 11 children. Growing up in the Turtle Lake, she would help her parents work in their garden, on the cattle ranch and at the livestock barn buying and selling cattle. A few years after graduation from Turtle Lake High School, she and her parents moved to Bismarck, ND. Marion married J.D. Kirschman of December 12, 1947 in Steele, ND. JD and Marion raised a son, John and a daughter, Elizabeth. Over the 57 years JD and Marion were married, they lived in many towns in North Dakota. For short periods of time Marion and JD owned and operated three different cafés in Tuttle, Streeter, and Kindred, ND. Marion also worded at the Five and Dime Store in Valley City, and for JC Penney in Jamestown. Marion and J.D. enjoyed traveling. They visited all the States west of the Mississippi and many New England States, as well as many placed in Canada and Mexico. Marion continued to enjoy traveling until the day she passed away. At age 92, she was on her final 800-mile journey to Thermopolis, Wyoming, where she passed away from old age. This was her 60th year, in a row, going to Thermopolis to enjoy the hot mineral water. Marion also enjoyed music. She taught her two children how to play the guitar and other instruments. One of the accomplishments Marion was the most proud of was being a part of the German from Russia Choir which she directed for 10 years. The choir performed at many nursing homes, churches and other events in central North Dakota. In her later years she would play piano at Oak Manor and the Good Samaritan Society-Bottineau Nursing Home. She played for Hymn Sing, Memorial Services, Church Services, just for fun and for the St. Mark's Catholic Mass at Good Sam. ( she called herself a Baptist Catholic) In 2002, Marion and JD moved to Bottineau. In 2004, her husband, JD passed away. Marion continued to enjoy traveling, playing piano and doing volunteer work helping "those Old People" at Good Sam. At 90, she was honored with her greatest achievement, other than raising her 2 children, when she became the North Dakota Long Term Care Volunteer of the Year. Additionally, she was a lifetime member of the "German from Russia Society" and a member of the First Baptist Church of Bottineau. Marion will be greatly missed by her son, John (Marcia) Kirschman of Clarkston, WA, and daughter, Liz (Ron) Miller of Bottineau, ND; her 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Rueben (Vi) Schlichenmayer of Bismarck, ND. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and 5 step-children. In addition to her husband, JD, she was preceded in death by her parents; 5 sisters; 4 brothers; and one nephew. Arrangements were with Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau, North Dakota and the Mortimore Funeral Home in Thermopolis, Wyoming. Source: Nero Funeral Home
