She was preceded in death by her parents, older brother Lowell (died from cardiovascular disease), younger brother, Harold (died at age 6 from diphtheria), and a grandson, Curtis Loe (died at age 15 from a motorcycle accident). Read More	On Monday, April 11, 2011, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great, great grandmother, Marjorie Hazel Shay Grove Dameron, 96, passed away from causes incident to age. She was preceded in death by her parents, older brother Lowell (died from cardiovascular disease), younger brother, Harold (died at age 6 from diphtheria), and a grandson, Curtis Loe (died at age 15 from a motorcycle accident). Marjorie was born in Willipa, Pacific County, Washington on May 4, 1914 to William Jessie Shay and Elsie Lillian Knapp Shay. She had two siblings, an older brother, Lowell Jesse Shay, and a younger brother, Harold Shay. Marjorie grew up in the Willipa/Raymond Washington area and often told stories of her happy childhood. In particular, she loved living near her "Irish" cousins and other relatives. After graduating from high school, she attended Bellingham State Normal School where she received a teaching certificate. She taught elementary and secondary grades in Washington, Oregon, and California. She was well liked and respected as a teacher. Because of her teaching excellence, parents would frequently request that she continue on with their children to the next grade level, which, a few times, she did. She took continuing education courses and graduated from the University of Oregon with her bachelors of science in education. Her love of learning was reflected, in part, by continuing to take post bachelor courses from the University of Oregon as well as other universities. While teaching in Washington, she met and married Jacob Elmore Grove. Together they had four children, Rebecca Grove Loe Reese (William), Michael Elmore Grove (Laurie), Daniel Phillip Grove (Larke), and Patrick Leland Grove. They divorced in 1956 and she married Robert Dameron. They later divorced. Because of her love of learning and efforts to achieve a strong educational foundation for her children, most of her children and grandchildren have gone on to higher education. Her children have achieved bachelors and masters degrees in finance, economics, accounting, social sciences, education, and health care. Her grandchildren have followed suit and are in the process of or have achieved degrees in law, medicine, finance, accounting, science, and the arts. In addition to her four children, she is survived by 16 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and seven great, great grandchildren. Being happy and finding fun in life was another aspect of Marjorie's unique personality. She made life an exhilarating experience for herself as well as those near her. She was proud of her Irish heritage and often spoke of the traits of that people accepting that culture's weaknesses and strengths and identifying with both, particularly with their "fun-loving" nature. She searched out the Irish in all those she met and if you possessed any of the traits she identified as being Irish, and/or you told her you were Irish or part Irish, you became more valuable to her. She performed extensive work on the genealogy of the Irish side of her family and with the help of her grandson by marriage compiled a comprehensive history of that branch of her family tree. Marjorie's desire to find fun and happiness was manifested, in part, as she traveled the world through euro-rail passes, self-directed tours, and multiple cruises. The cruises gave her the touch of elegance she loved, provided ballroom dancing opportunities, exposed her to people of all cultures and allowed her to explore the world from a safe and comfortable platform. Many of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have followed her example by traveling to many parts of the world---a fact for which she was very proud. Marjorie loved music and demonstrated her love for it by playing the piano in her home, schools, and programs, directing school musicals, singing in church choirs and performing solos publically, and participating in square and folk dancing groups. She was also an accomplished self-taught artist as the walls of her family's homes will attest. Several of her children and grandchildren have inherited her artistic abilities and their works are gracing the homes of their loved ones as well as in more public arenas. Marjorie strived to surround herself and her children with the beauties of life. For example, although she was a single mother living on a teacher's salary, her table was set with sterling silver, fine china and crystal. After her children were grown and set up their own homes, she encouraged them to continue to surround themselves and their families with finer things. Her greatest achievement, from her report, was her role as a mother. She was an active, involved parent. She helped her children succeed academically, taught them to play the piano, and read them bible stories. She also saw to it that her children were exposed to ballet, world leaders, and local plays. She supported them as they participated on their baseball, football, track, and swimming teams. She took road trips with her children traveling throughout the western states, often camping at federal and state camp sites so they could save money for their future "fun" activities. Her loyalty towards her children was legendary. While she didn't defend behavior(s) that were not up to her standards, she always supported her children and grandchildren when in the right and/or threatened. It was good to know that Mom/Grandma "had your back." Because she made certain that fun and goodness was part of her life, she always looked upon the positive side of things in hers as well as others lives. One grandson stated: "When you were with her, you knew you were her favorite person in the whole world. She had an ability to boost you up no matter how low you were and could always find the positive in yours or her situation, and then convince you it was for the best!" Other character traits that Marjorie possessed were fairness and unconditional acceptance. One of her granddaughters reports, "Grandma loved you for who you are, not for what she wanted you to be. She never held grudges. Although she may not see eye to eye with you, she valued your opinion."
