Marjorie was born May 10, 1923 in Vermillion, to Alfred N. and Fannie (Powell) Hanson. She graduated from Vermillion High School and attended the University of South Dakota. She married John Edward Carlin on May 31, 1945 in Alameda, CA. She was active in Girl Scouts, Red Cross, United Way, and the Republican Party. Marjorie was a member of and served as president of the SD VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of the South Dakota Federated Garden Clubs and served as Regional Director for the National Garden Club. The Butterfly Garden of The Outdoor Campus was a dream of Marjorie's. She applied for a grant to get the project started and the SDFGC adopted it as their state project. She designed the garden layout with the help of a landscape architect. With the hard work of dedicated volunteers Marjorie's dream became a reality. Marjorie had a varied work history. Early in her professional career she was employed as receptionist for Dr. Stansbury, youth activities director for the City of Vermillion and was a rural mail carrier for 12 years, Margaret Sletwold Greenhouse, secretary for USD administration, Bell Telephone Co. operator, book keeper for Central Gas Company, office manager and realtor for Phil Crew Agency for 18 years. After retirement, Marjorie was volunteer coordinator at the Butterfly Garden of TOC and taught beginner computer classes at the Center of Active Generations. She loved working with flowers, card playing, jigsaw puzzles, Wii bowling and listening to her grandkids and great grandkids share their stories. She was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. She is survived by a son, Nick Edward Carlin, Custer, SD; three daughters, Mary Jane (Van) Hunter, Cedar Crest, NM, Deborah (Larry) Burnight, Yankton, SD, Christine Carlin, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John; parents Alfred and Fannie; five sisters, Lucille, Doris, Joyce, Bonnie, Phyllis and two brothers, Lowell and Harold.
