Mr. Tripp was born May 1, 1931, in Lake Williams, N.D., the son of Zell and Stella (Johnson) Tripp. He was raised by Robert Rohde, his stepfather, after his father died when he was young. He farmed around the Pettibone area before owning and operating Pettibone Grocery Store - Tripps U-Save.
