Marlys was born on October 13, 1932, on a farm west of Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of Fred August and Alvina Anna (Hagen) Gade. She was baptized in her home on October 30, 1932, and later confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. Marlys attended the Waverly School System, graduating from the Waverly High School in 1950. Following her schooling, Marlys worked as a telephone operator in Waverly and later became the bookkeeper for the family business "Gade's Appliance & Carpet Corner" which was started in 1939, by her father. On April 4, 1954, she was united in marriage to Richard Darrell Benschoter at the 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waterloo by Rev. Bruno Schalktenhaufen. The couple made their home in Waverly, where Marlys continued to work in the family business until she retired. Marlys and Dick just celebrated their 59th Wedding Anniversary on April 4th of this year. Marlys was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. In her spare time, she would enjoy taking care of her indoor plants, playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends. Marlys is survived by her husband, Dick Benschoter of Waverly; her four children and their spouses, Daniel (Terri) Benschoter of Waverly, Gail Benschoter of Waverly, Douglas (Ann) Benschoter of Delafield, Wisconsin, Stephen (Deb) Benschoter of Waterloo; 8 grandchildren, Troy McCumber, Ryan Benschoter, Maggie Benschoter, Grant Benschoter, Claire Benschoter, Derek Benschoter, Courtney DeHoet, Seth Benschoter; one great grandchild, Emeri; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Gade and Bernice Gade both of Waverly; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Dale Allen in 1960; three brothers, Duane (who was only 9 months old); Wayland in 2009 and Harold in 2012. Funeral services will be on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with Pastor Joyce Sandberg from St. Paul's Lutheran officiating. Visitation will be held at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly at a later date.
