Description	:	Marquis D. Hale was born Feb. 6, 1847 in Wapello Co. Iowa, son of Vinton & Elizabeth Smith Hale. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Knox Co. Illinois where his mother had family. Marquis served in the 7th Illinois Calvary during the Civil War, lying about his age to do so. He married Mary Francis Page Dec. 7, 1871 in Hermon, Illinois. They were the parents of an unnamed son who died at birth July 1, 1878, buried in the Hermon Christian Cemetery. About that time his sister, Elva Hale Gee, died & Marquis & Mary... About that time his sister, Elva Hale Gee, died & Marquis & Mary took in her 6 year old son Harley Gee to raise. In 1882 Marquis, Mary, Harley, & daughter Eva moved to Clarke Co. Iowa. There they had 3 more children: Bessie, Charley, & Raymond. He engaged in farming early on, later moved to Osceola, where he was a constable at the court house for a number of years. A fall, which fractured his hip, eventually caused complications which resulted in his death on April 19, 1932.
