Read More	From the Oxford Standard, Nebraska, Thursday, 10 March 1921 Death of Mrs. Mattie Payne A telegram was received Saturday afternoon by Avon Arnsberger that Mrs. Mattie Payne had passed away at the home of her sister, Mrs. Clark in Eleanor, Illinois, and that the body would arrive in Oxford Monday afternoon on No. 1. Mrs. Payne has been in very feeble health for two years and she was taken to Illinois two years ago to be near her own people and where she could be better cared for. Since Mr. Payne died in 1907 she has been living alone in her home here, with occasional trips to Illinois to visit with her sister and sometimes her niece. Mrs. Mattie Clark would be with her here to comfort her lonely hours. Mr. and Mrs. Payne were early pioneers to this country and were greatly respected by all who knew them. She was of a retiring disposition and never strong physically and was very little in society of late years. She had a lovable nature and always appreciated her friends and enjoyed their friendship. Her remains arrived on No. 1 Monday accompanied by her nephew and niece, Mr. J.B. Clark and Miss Mattie Clark. Mattie Barton was born near Monmouth, Illinois, 18 March 1848 and died near the old home in Illinois, 5 March 1921. She was married to Mr. E.A. Paine June 1874 and very soon afterwards they came to Nebraska and settled on a farm north of Oxford. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and faithful in attendance. In about 1900 they left the farm and came to Oxford where Mr. Payne died in 1907. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Margaret Clark to mourn her loss and a number of nephews and nieces. She was the mother of five children, but unfortunately these all died in infancy. The funeral was held on Tuesday from the Presbyterian church, conducted by Dr.E.K. Bailey and the remains taken to the Union cemetery at the Highland church and placed beside her husband.
