Lockwood, 44, wife of a prominent Elm island farmer, two miles east of Denman, died in the Mary Lanning hospital at Hastings shortly after 7 o'clock Saturday evening. Death following an illness of six weeks, was due to complications. Martha A. Kroll, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Ann Kroll, was born in the vicinity of Kenesaw on Sept. 28, 1895. She spent her girlhood days on the farm and at Prosser. She was assistant postmistress at Prosser for several years and also served as the telephone operator there for some time. On Feb. 28, 1917, she was united in marriage at Hastings to Courtland W. Lockwood, and to this union eight children were born. One daughter, Beatrice and an infant son preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, six children, Geraldine, Grand Island; and Milford, Douglas, Corrine, Bryan and Virginia at home. Mrs. Lockwood also leaves her father; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Mason, Prosser; Mrs. Anastatia Monthey, Hayland, Nebr., and one brother, August Kroll, Prosser. She was a good wife and mother, possessed an exceptionally kind and patient disposition and had a host of friends. Brief services were conducted at the family home at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, after which last rites were held in the Shelton Presbyterian church, with Rev. Fenton C. Jones, pastor of the Wood River Presbyterian church officiating. Mrs. Alma Dykeman, Mrs. Wauneta Ernst, Gus Bohlke, and Elmer Bohlke sang: "Going Down the Valley," and "The Old Rugged Cross." There was a large attendance at the funeral, and the many and beautiful floral tributes seemed to convey expressions of sympathy from neighbors and friends who had gathered to pay their last respects. Interment was made in the Shelton cemetery and the casketbearers were: Clarence Lindeberg, Percy Wells, Howard Miller, Geo. Morse, Wm. Wiese and Russell Lippincott. Relatives from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Lockwood and Mrs. Alex Matheson of Hugo, Colo., the former being a brother of C. W. Lockwood.
