She was married to John Piper April 20, 1854. They came to the present farm in Clarke County, Iowa, in the fall of 1856. Ten children were born to this union—two infants dying soon after birth, Mary E. Stephenson, Elisha M. John H., Martha A. Robins, George W., Iona V. They came to the present farm in Clarke County, Iowa, in the fall of 1856. Ten children were born to this union—two infants dying soon after birth, Mary E. Stephenson, Elisha M. John H., Martha A. Robins, George W., Iona V. Maxwell, and Emma V.—all of whom are living with the exception of Iona Maxwell. This union was broken by the death of John Piper, January 21, 1894. Martha Piper still resided on the farm, until her death last Saturday morning, May 26, 1906, at 9:30 o'clock. Her age was 72 years, 1 month and 24 days. She leave to mourn her departure, four sisters, two brothers and seven children together with twenty three grandchildren and many friends. The children were all present when she peacefully passed away except Elisha M. of Nebraska, who arrived later. The deceased with her husband united with the Methodist Protestant church in the year 1864. This denomination was then stationed at the Barnhill school house, but was later moved to the frame church. The funeral services were held at her late home Monday afternoon, May 28, at 2 o'clock conducted by the Rev. A. A. Walburn of the Osceola M. E. church, who preached the sermon from the words "She hath done what she could," after which the body was laid to rest In the Cox cemetery. A large gathering of people, old neighbors and friends, were present to show their love and respect for the character of Mother Piper, and express sympathy for the bereaved family.
