Mrs. Stephenson was born in Clarke county and this has been her home practically all of her long life. Mary Ellen Stephenson, daughter of John and Martha Piper, was born in Clarke county, Iowa on January 1, 1857 and passed away at the home of her brother, G. W. Piper, near Osceola on September 18, 1943 at the age of 84 years, 8 months and 17 days. With the exception of about five years spent in Kansas, her life was lived in Clarke county. She was united in marriage to John Samuel Stephenson on April 20, 1884. Five children were born to this union. They are Mrs. Wm. Burgus, Fred D. Stephenson and Glenn H. Stephenson of Albert Lea, Minn. and Frankie R. who died when 3 years old. The above mentioned children and brother, and one sister, Miss Emma Pipe; 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and many other relatives remain to mourn. The husband preceded his companion in death on January 8, 1917. For a number of years Grandma Stephenson lived in Osceola, taking care of her mother-in-law. Nine years ago she went to the farm to keep house for her brother where death took her after only a few days illness. Many years ago she affiliated herself with the M.P. church in the Frame neighborhood and was known for her kindly spirit, always ready to extend a helping hand to those in sorrow or need. For this reason she was frequently called into the homes and to the bedside in time of childbirth or in the time of death. Her wish was granted in that she could serve unto the end rather than be served herself. Death brings to her the coveted rest.
