Mrs. Filloon was the daughter of Walter Freeman, Esq., who came with his family to Cedar county, Iowa, May 10th, 1836, Martha Jane being two and a half years old, and Mr. Freeman's family being the first white family to settle in Cedar county. Mrs. Martha Jane Filloon departed this life at her late residence in Cedar county, Iowa, Nov. 25th, 1899, aged 66 years and 3 days. Mrs. Filloon was the daughter of Walter Freeman, Esq., who came with his family to Cedar county, Iowa, May 10th, 1836, Martha Jane being two and a half years old, and Mr. Freeman's family being the first white family to settle in Cedar county. She united in marriage with Mr. Wm. Filloon in said county Dec. 26th, 1850, and to them were born eight children , five sons and three daughters, six of whom survive her, four sons and two daughters--all being present at her death, and were permitted to minister to her in her last sufferings, excepting her son John M. who resides in the state of Oregon. Mrs. Filloon became a Christian in 1858 and united with the Methodist church , but the organization to which she belonged, suspended a few years later, and she again united in 1887 with the United Brethren church, where she remained a faithful and loyal member until she passed up to the church triumphant. Her last sickness was long but her patience proved supreme, and when the time of her change came, she exhibited the heroic faith of the Christian, thus bearing testimony in her death, as well as her life, to the religion which she professed. She has two sisters, Mrs. Julia Ann Hain, of Defiance, Iowa, and Mrs. Louisa Gilliland, of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, who were present in her last illness and on the occasion of the funeral. Mrs. Filloon was a woman of strong character and possessed the confidence and respect of those who knew her. She was generous, self-sacrificing and noble, in her relation to others. Her influence was for good. She has sent out to the world children, respectable, who bear the impress of a worthy mother. Her memory will be cherished and many of her deeds will be imitated. She was interred by the side of her late husband, in the Union church cemetery, on Tuesday, November 28th, 1899. The funeral obsequies were conducted by her pastor, Rev. I. K. Staton, D. D., of Lisbon U. B. Church. The sermon he delivered from a text of her own choosing: Psalms 23:1-3, and the music was beautifully rendered by the quartet of the Lisbon U. B. church.
