Description	:	Adams County Free Press Corning, Iowa July 20, 1938 July 22, 1937 - Mount Etna, Iowa - Mrs. Martha Thompson, 91, who lives two miles north of here, is the only surviving member of the first three families which pioneered to Adams county in 1852. Her family settled along the banks of the Middle Nodaway River. It was in this vicinity that Chief Mahaska, one of the famous Iowa Indians was murdered in 1834. Mrs. Thompson makes her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kissler. She proudly exhibits a quilt she made. It has more than 3,000 pieces. Mrs. Thompson also crochets.... When not sewing, she devotes time to reading newspapers, the radio, conversing with friends, and even weeding her flower garden. Adams County Free Press Corning, Iowa May 21, 1936 Martha Maria Ingersoll was born March 21, 1852 in Jo Davies County, Illinois and died at her home in Mt. Etna, May 14, 1936, at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 33 days. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church at Mt. Etna conducted by Rev. Weed, assisted by Rev. Harry Rogers. Interment was made in Mt. Etna Cemetery. In 1856 the deceased came with her parents to Adams County, where she spent the rest of her life near Mt. Etna. She was married to John L. Thompson June 22, 1871 who preceded her in death in the year 1913. To them were born 8 children, all of who survive. These are: Mrs. Vinnie Davis, Mrs. Annis Sterns, James, Charles, Robert, and Mrs. Hattie Hickman of Mt. Etna; George of Shenandoah; and Mrs. Elva Gossard of Clear Springs, Missouri. She is also survived by two brothers, Columbus of Sheldon, Kansas; and Grant of Industrial City, Missouri; 18 grandchildren and a host of friends. Early in life Mrs. Thompson untied with the Methodist Church and was ever a faithful member. Those who remember her in her earlier days will always hold as a sacred memory in their hearts the loving care and great kindness tendered their dear ones by Grandma Thompson.
