Robert Wedow officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery. Martha was born June 27, 1944, in Sterling to Matthew and Anna (Gartner) Korbe. She graduated from Iliff High School in 1962. In December 1971, she married Michael A. Grams of Aurora. Mrs. Grams was a seamstress for several years and worked in retail before her health forced her to stay home to take care of herself and her family. She enjoyed collecting old knick-knacks and cook books; sewing, knitting, crochet and crafts of all kinds. She loved flowers and gardening, canning and cooking. She was a member of the Queen of Peace parish in Aurora. She died at home from complications from her 30 year battle with three different cancers. Martha was a farm girl through and through. She was taught that a job worth doing was worth doing well. She was diligent in that respect. She did not cut corners and would not let others do so on her behalf. She enjoyed doing the down-to-earth things that a true farm girl needs to survive. She liked to cook and bake, especially on a cold, winter day. She loved to fire up the oven and bake up two or three desserts. This had the additional benefit of warming up the house. Needless to say, she was an excellent cook over all, and so we always had a scrumptious meal on the table. She loved crafting and sewing. She made clothes for Mike and Nikki, curtains for the house and even dabbled in upholstery a bit. She was the complete, loving wife and mother. Household chores were just the things you do, and she did them well, of course. She loved flowers and gardening and always had a large garden. She would preserve food stuffs for the winter by canning until the "new fangled" idea of freezing food came along. She was slow to take up this way of preserving foods, but as her health worsened and her energy started flagging, she started doing things the "easier" way. Over the years she worked several jobs outside the home as a clerk, pharmacy assistant, seamstress, and in a very large book warehouse. Right after Michael met her, she had a chance to transfer from Greeley to Phoenix, Ariz., with State Farm Insurance. I guess absence does make the heart grow fonder and eventually she came back to Colorado and they married and had one beautiful daughter, Nikki. More were planned, but her first cancer, in 1977, nipped that dream in the bud when Martha lost her ability to have children. In 1993, just as her daughter went off to college, she was diagnosed with slow growing Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. From the outside, she might have made having cancer look easy. She was very private and not many people knew how tired and sick it could make her. She put on a brave face and battled harder. Many people have said how her courage inspired them. In 2001, she then got colorectal cancer and ended up with a colostomy. In January 2008, her lymphoma changed over to the fast growing kind. Her last year was a draining odyssey of hospital visits and trips to the emergency room and the cancer clinic. In January 2009, she chose to stop treating the cancer and just wanted to stay home and have a little quality time before death. Unfortunately that time went much faster than expected. On Feb. 6, 2009, she passed on, I am certain, to a very high place in Heaven. Most people have a ‘career' for half of their lives. Martha would have liked to retire many years ago from her ‘career' of cancer. Martha is survived by her husband, Michael; daughter, Nicole of Pueblo; brothers, Jim Korbe and wife Doris of Sterling, Charles Korbe and Mary Eastman of Sterling, Paul Korbe and wife Wilma of Sterling, and Dave Korbe and wife Anne of Sterling; sister, Nancy Jilling and husband John of Westminster. Mrs. Grams is preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Anna (Gartner) Korbe; and sister, Pauline Marks. The family requests that when you take the time to remember Martha, celebrate her life, remember her spirit, enrich someone else's life or send flowers to someone you love or to a hospital or nursing home. — Paid Memorial
