Description	:	The sad news was received here yesterday morning of the suicide by hanging of Mrs. Mattie (Beatty Cox) Claflin, wife of George Claflin, living two miles north of Lebanon. Mrs. Claflin had been in poor health a month or more past, and her mind had been unbalanced the greater part of the time. Late Tuesday night Mr. Claflin lay down on a couch near his wife's bedside, and fell asleep about 12 o'clock. Read More	The sad news was received here yesterday morning of the suicide by hanging of Mrs. Mattie (Beatty Cox) Claflin, wife of George Claflin, living two miles north of Lebanon. Mrs. Claflin had been in poor health a month or more past, and her mind had been unbalanced the greater part of the time. Late Tuesday night Mr. Claflin lay down on a couch near his wife's bedside, and fell asleep about 12 o'clock. At daylight yesterday morning he awoke and was horrified at the spectacle of his wife hanging from the transome over her bedroom door. She had tied one end of a towel around her neck and the other over the transom bar, and then stepped down to her death. She had not been hanging long, as her body was still warm when discovered. A coroner's inquest was held yesterday and a verdict returned in accordance with the above facts. Mrs. Claflin was about 35 years old. Her maiden name was Mattie Beatty, and she was a sister of Mr. W.H. Beatty, east of town, and Misses Ella, Maggie and Emma Beatty of this place. Mrs. Claflin had lived here most of her life and was highly respected. She was married to Mr. Claflin about two years ago. About 10 years ago she was married to a Mr. Cox, but he died, leaving a widow with two children, the oldest of whom is now about nine years old. It is said Mrs. Claflin attempted to take her own life about a week ago. The funeral will be held at the M.E. church at this place at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
