Description	:	Opal's parents, Al & Bertha Cook's daughter Bertha Elaine died 2-23-1917 at 4 days old. The physician suggested they adopt a baby soon to console Bertha; so Alfred went to Omaha and chose a baby (Opal) who had been born to a physician and nurse (not married) in Central City, Nebraska. The physician suggested they adopt a baby soon to console Bertha; so Alfred went to Omaha and chose a baby (Opal) who had been born to a physician and nurse (not married) in Central City, Nebraska. They had given the baby to an adoption agency in Omaha. The physician was a married man, though not married to that nurse. Alfred got Opal at the Nebraska Child Savings Institute, a reputable adoption agency to this day in 2009, as I write this. Alfred was accompanied back to Loup City on the train by a nurse from the orphanage to care for the baby. With them, also, was another man from Loup City who had gone to get a baby for himself and his wife. The nurse cared for both babies. Those two girls grew up as friends. Opal was the Postmistress in Madrid for a number of years. Methodist, though she was more active in the church after her husband's death and her retirement, when she became church treasurer for years. Opal had very little need to know about her genetic parentage, just enough curiosity to ask around a bit, and found that her real mother was a Central City, NE young woman nurse with the maiden name of Boyd who became pregnant and her parents required her to give up the baby right away. Miss Boyd then, soon after that married a Mr Winnter and lived with him in Lusk, WY and had 5 children and later marrried a Mr. Johnson. In Nov. 1929 Opal was living with her uncle Archibald Bertain Cook and his family at 1528 So. Cornelia, Sioux City, IA and at that time wrote a letter to her brother John at Madrid, NE, which places them both at that time. Not long after that she, herself, moved to Madrid, where she spent the rest of her life. In her later years Opal was much overweight, and wore loose fitting, robe-like dresses. She was a heavy smoker, but a kind sweet-natured woman. On 22 Sept 1989 Opal was shopping in North Platte, NE with a friend. On the way home to Madrid she got sick a couple of times and had to stop, finally asking her friend to take over the driving. As they got near Wallace, NE on the way to Madrid, she died in the car, of a heart attack. Her death was in the late afternoon. Her funeral was in the Methodist Church in Madrid at 1:30 PM. She was church treasurer at the time of her death. Opal and her brother John E. Cook were very good friends in their adult life. When together they would sit up late into the night, smoking and visiting together over coffee at the kitchen table. They were both very nice, easy-to-get-along-with people. John was always a good person; Opal grew to be that way once she got out of her promiscuous early teen years. Opal was assistant postmaster in Madrid for many years, and then after the postmaster retired, she became the postmistriss. It was a good job for her, and gave her a good pension in her retirement years.
