Description	:	Marthe Pedersdatter Haugen was born March 7, 1854 in Norway, the fourth child, first daughter of Peder and Marthe Arnesen Haugen. She came to the United States in 1870, with her parents and three of her brothers. They lived in the St. Ansgar-Ottawa area of Iowa until 1878, when they seem to have been the first of the family to migrate to North Dakota. Read More	Marthe Pedersdatter Haugen was born March 7, 1854 in Norway, the fourth child, first daughter of Peder and Marthe Arnesen Haugen. She came to the United States in 1870, with her parents and three of her brothers. They lived in the St. Ansgar-Ottawa area of Iowa until 1878, when they seem to have been the first of the family to migrate to North Dakota. With a family of 3 small children, they packed their belongings into a covered wagon pulled by a team of horses, and set off across the prairie toward the northwest, until they reached the Red River Valley of North Dakota. They settled there on virgin land in Belmont Township of Traill County, land which descendants continued to farm long into the 1970's. The first order of business was to quickly dig out of the ground and furnish a sod house, finding shelter in the meantime in their covered wagon. The story has been handed down by Martha that in the sod house, when it rained, she and newborn son (possibly Hildus, according to information given by Julius Erickson and the state of ND) sought shelter under the table which was covered by oilcloth, and so kept them dry. They lived this way for some unknown years, until Hans could obtain logs and other necessary wherewithal to build a more agreeable home...a log cabin. In about 1900, Hans built a magnificent 13-room frame home. Hans and Martha reared their large family of 15 children to adulthood in that house, and farmed through the years. Marthe died in 1917 and Hans in July 1932. Both are buried in the Grue Lutheran Cemetery, not far from their farm home.
