She was born in Easton, West Virginia and raised by foster parents. The last services for Mrs. Martha Swearingen were held from her home on the corner of First Avenue and Eleventh street W. Martha Vandervort was born in West Virginia June 13, 1839 and she passed away in Oelewin April 14, 1911, aged, seventy-one years, ten months and one day. She was united in marriage to Isaac Swearingen July 25, 1858 in West Virginia and in 1863 the family moved to Missouri where they were located till 1905 when they came to make Oelwein their home. Mr. Swearingen's death occurred two years ago. To them were born six children, five of whiom survive her. They are the Misses Delia and Clara Swearingen, Mrs. G. A. Santee and Mrs. G. J. Sharp, residents of Oelwein, and Mrs. Alfred MiHier, of Rowley. In early life she united with the Methodist church and she lived a consistent Christian life. Beside the children she is survived by eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a good Christian wife and mother and was held in high esteem by her relatives and all who knew her.
