He also played drums in the Munster Band. His father and brother Robert played cornets. His two little brothers, me and Olger, played the alto horns. This band played for many community gatherings and a few barn dances in the early years." "Martin joined his brothers in a singing quartet (singing in both Norwegian and English). He sang bass, Robert first tenor, Olger baritone, and I sang second tenor. We were called on to sing at community gatherings, church weddings, and funerals. We were called the Myhre Brothers Quartet. When Olger was away at school and later teaching, Ferd Sundberg filled in." "Martin was never very accomplished with the violin. He did form a little 5-piece orchestra with himself on drums, Robert on cornet, two Halvorsen brothers--Peter on Trombone and Bernhard on piano; Olaus Olson played the violin." "Around 1919 Martin and all we boys assisted in building the Round Barn. A funny thing happened to Martin one day. He picked up a board and a field mouse ran up his pants leg and onto his back. His screams could be heard all over munster township. The barn carpenters rolled on the ground laughing." "After Martin was married (to Dorothy Olson) he ran for Sheriff of Eddy County. He lost by three votes. In 1936, Martin became a game warden for North Dakota and in 1938 became a district game warden serving New Rockford, Devils Lake, Garrison, and Minot." While the family lived in New Rockford, Martin and Dorothy were divorced and Martin married Alice Ruth Anderson. In 1955, Martin retired as game warden, and then managed the Minnewaukan Lumber Yard for six years. After he retired from managing the lumber yard, Martin and Alice and family moved to Devils Lake, where he was a member of St. Olaf church, the Sons of Norway, the Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges. Martin was the father of six children, three with his first wife, and three with his second wife. During his retirement, Martin enjoyed spending time with his family ... his wife, children, and grandchildren. Martin died November 7, 1985, in a rest home in Devils Lake just a few days shy of his eighty-seventh birthday. Nearly all of Martin's biography was written by his younger brother, Jens Myhre, Jr. in 1993. Transcribed by David M. Pierce.
