Description	:	Robert was christened "Ole Robert Myhre" but he nearly always went by Robert. Robert spent his formative years helping out on the farm, as all of the Myhre boys did. When he was 21 years old, he registered for the draft for WWI and reported that he was a farm laborer, with his father as an employer. When he was 21 years old, he registered for the draft for WWI and reported that he was a farm laborer, with his father as an employer. The draft form indicated that he was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and red hair. Robert, his brother Martin, and their father, Jens, all played cornets in a community band that played at local community events and barn dances. Robert also joined his brothers in a singing quartet (they sang in both English and Norwegian): Robert sang first tenor; Martin sang bass; Olger sang baritone; and Jens Jr. sang second tenor. The year after he registered for the draft, 1919 was an exciting time in the life of the Myhre farm. Robert's father, Jens, came up with the idea of building a round barn. Jens drew up the plans and hired two extra workers to come in to help the family build the unique structure. Robert and the rest of his brothers helped out. The barn became well known in the county. Robert never married, and continued to live on the home farm. He also went into business with his brother Martin for a time, renting and working neighboring farms for profit. After his father's death in 1952, Robert managed the home farm for his mother, while his siblings had all moved on. Ten years later, tragedy struck when Robert was killed in a farming accident. It was a freak accident, which terribly enough involved Robert's friend, Tollef Skaar. Tollef's truck, which was carrying a load of hay, went into a ditch. Bundles of hay flew off the truck and struck Robert, killing him on the spot. Tollef never could forgive himself after that. Robert was 64 when he died. My mother remembered her uncle fondly, and said he was kind and considerate to her. My sister, as a child, also had good memories of her granduncle, recalling how he would give her candy and loose change from his pockets the first time he'd see her at our family visits back to North Dakota. Gunhild was not able to stay on the farm alone, and after Robert's death, she moved to her daughter Margit's in New Rockford. Biography written by David Pierce, 1993.
