The bank now is known as the National... Read More	M. L. THOMPSON DIES SUDDENLY Vermillion Civic Leader and Financier, 67, Expires in Utah Vermillion, S.D. -- Special: Martin L. Thompson, 67, Vermillion civic and business leader, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon at Nephi, Utah, while on his way here by automobile with Mrs. Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a former director of the First National bank of Sioux City. He also had been president of the First National bank here, which was purchased in 1929 by the First Bank Stock Corporation of Minneapolis, and consolidated with the Vermillion National bank. The bank now is known as the National Bank of South Dakota. Mr. Thompson was born November 26, 1879, at Vermillion. He was graduated in 1901 from the University of South Dakota and in 1905 he married Robin Bell here. She died in 1908. In 1909 he married Julie Brice at Chicago. World War I Officer He was a captain in world war I and served in France. He held a commission as a lieutenant colonel in the army reserve. Mr. Thompson, with Cal Dennison, was credited with being largely responsible for the organization of Wallace post, the first American Legion post in South Dakota. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Through the Thompson Co., he directed the administration of farms and ranch holdings throughout the state. He was the first Ford automobile dealer in Vermillion and also had sold other automobiles. Gave Heavily to Hospital With his brother, Orville, and mother, Mr. Thompson gave a large contribution to the Dakota hospital when it was begun here. The fund was a memorial to his father, M.D. Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a charter member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In accordance with his wishes there will be no public funeral service, Graveside rites will be held here. Survivors include the widow, Julie: three daughters, Mrs. Morris Chaney of Vermillion; Mrs. Hunt Ferris of Altadena, Cal.; and Mrs. T.E. Poe of Beaver, Pa. ******************************** In Bluff View Cemetery there is a memorial plaque placed on the Thompson family mausoleum which documents Martin Lewis Thompson's life (1879-1947). On his Utah death certificate burial is indicated at Forest Lawn, Glendale, California but no other memorial exists for him at Find A Grave.
