Description	:	Martin Van Buren Manley was born in Ripley County, Indiana, the son of Martin Manley, born 1805 at Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont, and Huldah Hofford, born 1807 at Mansfield, Cattaraugus County, New York. Martin Van Buren grew to manhood in Ripley County, where he enlisted in the Grand Army of the Republic. He served his term of duty as a Private in Company B of the 51st Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. Following his discharge from the army, Martin returned home. Read More	Martin Van Buren Manley was born in Ripley County, Indiana, the son of Martin Manley, born 1805 at Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont, and Huldah Hofford, born 1807 at Mansfield, Cattaraugus County, New York. Martin Van Buren grew to manhood in Ripley County, where he enlisted in the Grand Army of the Republic. On May 7, 1865, he was united in marriage with Hannah Elvira McKee. Martin was a farmer throughout his life. The young couple was in Crawford, Illinois, for the birth of their first child, David Stephen Manley, but had relocated to Pawnee County, Nebraska, in 1867, where their next five children were born: Oliver Parry, Samuel Jacob, Joseph Moncloe (Dick), Orpha Bell and James Monroe. By 1875, the family had moved to Marshall County, Kansas, where the couple's last two children were born: Caroline and Philip Sheridan. (In the 1900 U.S.Census, it was recorded that Hannah had eight children, seven of whom were living.Caroline Manley born April 2, 1875 died before 1880. The Manley family lived in northeastern Kansas, a short distance south of the Kansas-Nebraska state line and just south of Pawnee County, Nebraska, for several years. They were enumerated in the 1875 Kansas State Census at the town of Guittard, just south of Summerfield, and at the town of Murray in 1880. In 1882, Martin and Hannah left Kansas and settled at Edison in Furnas County, Nebraska, where they remained until their deaths. The couple is buried in the Edison Cemetery.
