Description	:	Martin Van Buren Sigler was born at the home of his parents in Monroe County, Ohio on May 17, 1837. He was the son of John and Rachel (Hoskinson) Sigler. He spent his early years in Ohio, but came to Iowa with his family in 1855 locating near Keokuk. He moved to Carroll County in 1874 and settled in Newton Township. Martin was married to a young girl Polly Mary Knight on April 11, 1858 in St. Francisville, Missouri. Read More	Martin Van Buren Sigler was born at the home of his parents in Monroe County, Ohio on May 17, 1837. He was the son of John and Rachel (Hoskinson) Sigler. He spent his early years in Ohio, but came to Iowa with his family in 1855 locating near Keokuk. He moved to Carroll County in 1874 and settled in Newton Township. Martin was married to a young girl Polly Mary Knight on April 11, 1858 in St. Francisville, Missouri. There were six children born to this union; Ashley, dying in infancy; and the remaining children still living, Lydia, H. Malcom, Belle, Sarepta and Rachel. He was a farmer and dedicated his life to raising his children and 23 grandchildren. Martin died on Christmas Day, December 25, 1918 in Carrollton, Iowa. He had been in failing health for some time and had a stroke of paralysis a few days before his death. He passed away in his 82nd year, having lived in Carroll County since 1874 and therefore was one of the earliest pioneers of this community. He served in the war of the rebellion and enlisted in the Union Army on August 10, 1861 at Keokuk, Iowa, Company H. 3rd Iowa Cavalry and served for four years. He also took an active interest in Grand Army and Post affairs. Funeral services were held at the residence with burial in the Carrollton Cemetery. Military honors were provided with six soldiers of 1917-18 acting as pall bearers. May he rest in eternal peace.
