James Sorte died Fri., Aug. 2, 1996, at the Mountain Valley Hospice House after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 22, 1931, in Plentywood, the son of Marvin and Bernice Sorte. He grew up in Scobey. James Sorte died Fri., Aug. 2, 1996, at the Mountain Valley Hospice House after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 22, 1931, in Plentywood, the son of Marvin and Bernice Sorte. He grew up in Scobey. After graduation from Scobey High School in 1949, he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He then returned to Montana and graduated from the University of Montana Law School in 1960. He married Anne Brown in 1968, in Great Falls. In 1969, he was appointed judge of the 15th Judicial District and served the people of that district while residing in Wolf Point until his retirement in 1994. He and his wife moved to Missoula in September 1995. During his time on the bench, Judge Sorte served as president of the Montana Trial Judges, on the Board of Crime Control, Montana Legal Services Board and was chairman of the Judicial Nomination Commission for many years. His parents preceded him in death. Cremation has taken place. At the family's request no services will be held at this time. A memorial service at the Montana Supreme Court will take place at a later date. The family suggests memorials to the Mountain Valley Hospice House in Missoula or to the University of Montana Law School Foundation. Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory in Missoula is in charge of arrangements.
