He was born in Blue Hill, Neb. on Oct. 24, 1921, a son of John and Margaret (Blum) Armstrong. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, serving as lead bombardier in the 452nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, in England during World War II. ARMSTRONG, of Lincoln, Neb., and formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2013. He was born in Blue Hill, Neb. on Oct. 24, 1921, a son of John and Margaret (Blum) Armstrong. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, serving as lead bombardier in the 452nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, in England during World War II. Two of his missions occurred on June 6, 1944, in support of the D-Day invasion. He flew 30 missions, 27 as lead bombardier, and earned several military honors including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1945 with the rank of Captain. He married Mary Inez Martin on Nov. 28, 1943. Marvin graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1949. He taught English and Journalism at Kearney High School before joining the FBI as a Special Agent in 1951. He served in the Dallas, San Antonio, Washington D.C., El Paso, and Indianapolis (Fort Wayne) field offices until his retirement in 1977. After retiring he worked as a private investigator during the family's long-time residence in Fort Wayne. Marvin and Mary returned to Nebraska in 1997, residing in Lincoln until his death. He was a devoted husband and family man who enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Mary; three children, Jill (Jan) Swank of Rapid City, S.D., Gail (Mike) Winkler of Slidell, La., and Drew (Shirai) of North Platte, Neb.; six grandchildren, Tyler Swank, Daniel and Lauren Winkler, and Holden (Shawnee), Spencer and Andrew Armstrong; sister, Lavona Borwege of Red Cloud, Neb.; brothers, Lyle (Ann) Armstrong of Folsom, Calif., Charles Stowers of Hastings, Neb.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, John, Burdette and Patrick (infant). Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Merten Butler Mortuary in Blue Hill, Neb., followed immediately by a graveside service at Blue Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the FBI Agents Association Memorial College Fund which provides scholarships to children and spouses of deceased FBI Agents. ~ Added by Scott Shoup
