Description	:	Marvin R. Powell, 50 former Akron city councilman and police chief, died suddenly Saturday morning (April 19, 1986) at his home in Akron of an apparent heart attack. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. The Rev Benard Nelson officiated. Carol Harris, vocalist, sang "What A Friend" and "One Day At A Time", accompanied by Phyllis Frisk, organist. Marvin Russell Powell, was born July 24, 1935 in Akron, Iowa to Arnold and Margaret Jacobs Powell. He graduated in 1954 from the Akron high school. He served two years in the U.S. army. He married Mary Ellen Hebeler Oct. 2, 1960 in Akron. They farmed for many years in the Akron area. He was employed for two years by Northern Propane in Akron. He joined the Akron police department April 27, 1967, was named police chief July 1, 1969, a position he held until resigning Aug. 29, 1975. In 1976 he began employment at Heede-Uddeman and was employed there at the time of his death. He served a 4-year term on the Akron city council from Jan. 1, 1981 to Dec. 31, 1985. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Akron. Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen; two daughters, Monica of LeMars and Angela of Sioux Falls; his parents, Arnold and Margaret Powell of Akron and a sister, Mrs. Richard (Marilyn) Sommervold of Alcester. He was preceded in death by one brother, Morris, April 6, 1973.
